Pro-nuclear lawmakers in
Washington, D.C., should
have taken advantage of
triple-digit temperatures
and a stressed electrical
grid in early July to renew
calls for a national energy
strategy that includes significantly more
reactors for energy generation.
As the East Coast was sweltering over the 4th
of July weekend, there was a very real risk of
rolling blackouts and brownouts.
With just 104 commercial reactors supplying
20 percent of the nation's energy, will two
dozen more proposed reactors be enough to
power the nation as consumers continue to
purchase energy-consuming flat screen
televisions and auto makers are moving
forward on plug-in hybrids? The East Coast
heat wave lasted just a few days, yet what
would have happened if triple-digit
temperatures went on for weeks?
